Checking the GIF visually and metadata, it appears it originally was a video file that was uploaded to ezGIF to make it into a GIF.

I've noticed some of their IB posts having ezgif in the filename. It might just be how they stitch the individual frames into an animation which would be pretty weird.

That is highly inefficient and stupid almost.
But with this GIF file, I'm seeing leftover pixels all over the place which does make GIF take less space when less stuff moves, but with videos it introduces further artifacting that makes it even worse. If you look at middle part, the red sky below the cloud should have artists name, but the video is so compressed that there's just fucking nothing. Also if this is video -> GIF -> video, it's just getting ridiculous.

  • The way I do it folks is I first make a gif with ffmpeg out of individual frames, then, if the resulting gif is larger than the minimum filesize for the sites I post it to (FA has a 10 MB filesize, for example!), I go to EzGif and use it's optimizer to make the gif smaller! If I need a video, I also directly convert the original gif into a video using Ezgif also - I mean, that's what it's for, right? "Ez" "gif"! If you know of a 'better' way of doing it, you can tell me!

To clarify once again, I don't take the ezgif-optimized GIF and convert it into a video, I take the original gif and both optimize it for FA and also make it into a video (using Ezgif's "GIF into MP4/WebM") if it's needed! Someone else must've used my Ez-giffed gif to make a video and upload this here on my behalf (I don't mind, but I didn't do that, just saying, folks!)

Maybe they downloaded the gif from the previous post and turned it into a video from there

if you want to try doing the video conversions locally (to save the time on uploading to and downloading from ezgif) you could try the free program HandBrake! Adapter might work too, but I had some trouble matching the framerate there because of the custom timings.

With HandBrake, leaving all the settings on Source with a decomb deinterlace filter on the Bob preset, I was able to get a decent looking mp4 that's only slightly bigger than this one (3.55mb vs 2.92mb) and the signature is a bit easier to read. There's probably some other settings in there that could make it even better, too, with the original uncompressed frames on hand.

(also, I love your work! your art style is awesome!)
