Granny Smith, she is Applejack, Big Mac, and Apple Bloom's grandmother. I believe she is also supposed to be one of Ponyville's founders, but that only came up once and might have been retconned later.

It wasn’t retconned; her family went to Canterlot and the princess gave them some land after her father was scammed in Canterlot. She fended off Timberwolves(Magical wood animated to resemble a wolf) solo and defended the farm.

yeah, I'm going to concur with CranialHeartache and say I'm going to need a source on this. there's been some claims made about this character in the comments of the last two pages that seem extremely suspect that I cannot find an external sources for.

I'd prefer hard textual evidence from the actual show or expanded media, but I'd also settle for just WoG, be that random tweets or panels or interviews or whatever.

That would be from the episode "Family Appreciation Day" . As for the claim that Granny Smith is a WW2 veteran, they were probably referring to the alternate timeline presented in season 5 where there was an all out war against King Sombra, which was clearly inspired by WW2. Would be a stretch to call that canon as its a completely alternate timeline.

Yes, however the jam she made from those apples became so popular that Ponyville was founded due to it. And her father was given the land by Celestia.
