Société anonyme des Établissements Nieuport also colloquially known as Nieuport and from 1920 to 1932 as Nieuport-Delage, as well as by many different other names during its existence, was a french airplane company and manufacturer founded in 1908 by Édouard Nieuport. As a premier of french airplane manufacturing, Nieuport is known mostly for its development of early french fighter aircraft used during world war one, and setting several top speed, distance, and height records with their planes. The company would eventually merge with the state owned SNCAO in 1937, making the company defunct.
Founded prior in 1902 by Édouard and his brother, the company originally manufactured electrical and motor components for automobiles. Before transitioning into building racing aircraft in 1908 after it was reformed into the Société Générale d'Aéro-Locomotion, eventually being renamed to Nieuport et Deplante after its founder in 1911. The company would go on to produce scouting planes for the french navy and army up through world war one. In 1916 it would begin producing early fighter aircraft for the french army, with the designs later serving to influence early fighter planes of the interwar period. After world war one, Nieuport continued to operate as a primarily military airplane manufacturer. The company would eventually merge with Loire Aviation in 1933 (and fully in 1935) to form Loire-Nieuport before being merged into SNCAO in 1937. After 1937 the Nieuport name would continue to be used for plane designs up until 1940.
